Originally formed in 2008 with a broad array of influences and eclectic musical tastes, the Hashem Assadullahi Quartet performs material that draws from straight-ahead jazz, avante garde, pop, and rock traditions. Over the years, the group has accumulated a strong and stylistically varied original repertoire, catered to the ensemble’s proclivity for collective improvisation. With a penchant for melody and narratives, the majority of Hashem’s pieces are vehicles for telling stories or portraying characters. The group has released two albums: Strange Neighbor (8bells, 014) and Pieces (OA2 records, 22097), frequently highlighted on NPR’s Morning Edition and Fresh Air.
